Migration control station Nivelle

Passe à poissons d'Uxondoa

On the Nivelle, the ORE DiaPFC manages two monitoring stations installed at the fish passes of the Olha and Uxondoa dams. The purpose of these facilities is 1) to obtain accurate data on the abundance and characteristics of the populations  and 2) to capture wild individuals for scientific purposes (tagging, genetic sampling, telemetric tracking, etc.).

The first monitoring station is situated at the Uxondoa fish pass, located downstream of the village of Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle. The facility is situated on a 2,000 m² plot of land owned by ONEMA, whilst the fish pass and technical buildings were constructed by FDPPMA 64. The second station is situated at the Olha fish pass, located upstream of the village. The facility is situated on land owned by the AAPPMA Nivelle (969 m²). The two fish passes, comprising successive pools, are built on weirs (belonging to a private owner) and are equipped with fish traps at the level of their upstream pool. The fish enter the trap cage (similar to a fyke net) and remain there until they are collected by the data collection team (staff from INRA, MIGRADOUR and the AAPPMA Nivelle). The two stations were modernised in 2011 and 2012 thanks to funding from the MIGRANET project (Interreg SUDOE).

Trapping

The Nivelle is equipped with two fish passes fitted with traps to monitor upstream migration: Uxondoa in the lower Nivelle (since 1984) and Olha at the junction of the lower and upper Nivelle (since 1992).

Data collection is carried out mainly at the Uxondoa monitoring station, which is equipped with an upstream migration intercept trap and is situated 4.7 km upstream of the salinity boundary. This is supplemented by monitoring of fish passing through the Olha fish pass

The Uxondoa and Olha traps operate continuously from March to January, except during periods of high water, repairs and on certain weekends when staff are on rotation (approximately every other weekend).
