 Diadromous Fish in Coastal Rivers

Observatoire de recherche en environnement sur les poissons diadromes dans les fleuves côtiers

About us

The objective of the Research Observatory on Diadromous Fish in Coastal Rivers (ORE DiaPFC) is to study changes in migratory fish populations in response to environmental changes (both global and local) that influence the watercourses they inhabit.

The ORE DiaPFC focuses on diadromous fish (salmon, trout, eel, shad, lampreys, etc.). These species, which have been severely weakened by human activity, are a key component of the biodiversity of coastal rivers. These rivers are now the main refuges for many of these fish, whose numbers have decreased significantly in larger rivers.

The ORE focuses on four rivers along the Atlantic coast: the Bresle River and Oir River in Normandy, the Scorff River in Brittany and the Nivelle River in the Basque Country. These four rivers, equipped with monitoring stations for migratory fish, have been subject to regular biological and physico-chemical monitoring since the early 1980s.

These stations are complemented by experimental facilities in Rennes and Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle. The ORE is also develops and uses individual-centred genetic models to experiment with virtual populations.

Whilst the trout fishing season opened on 14 March 2026, fishing for wild Atlantic salmon will remain banned again this year...

A scientific programme to monitor diadromous fish in the Nivelle, and in particular salmon, has been in place since 1984.
