40 Salmon and climate change : IBASAM

IBASAM (Individual Based Atlantic Salmon Model)

IBASAM is a model that simulates the evolution of salmon populations under scenarios of climate change and fishing pressure.

It is an individual-centered demographic-genetic model representing the progression of the salmon life cycle. It was built using the Pattern Oriented Modelling (POM) methodology.

It incorporates alternative salmon demographic tactics through response norms and evolutionary trade-offs; reproductive strategy through selective mating patterns; and the genetic transmission of traits governing response norms and growth.

Environmental effects (in freshwater and marine environments) are introduced through individual survival rates and growth; the latter influencing life history choices and survival in salmon. Fishing pressure, potentially selective, is also integrated. IBASAM leverages and synthesizes, at the individual level, the knowledge and data acquired by the DiaPFC ORE.
